THE COURSES

See below for a list of the courses available.

The General English course aims to improve students’ competence in all aspects of English.

It is divided into two parts: the first two hours of each day is a core language course which provides a graded introduction to grammar and vocabulary set in contexts that draw on the students' own experience. This makes the language more relevant to them.

The second half of the course provides practice in the four main skills of the language: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. [preferred order]
Not only do students learn to recognise English as it is spoken worldwide in a variety of accents, but they also learn the skill of good listening which is imparted to them by our staff of professional and highly-experienced teachers.

Enabling the students to speak English well and use the language with ease is the primary objective of our teaching.

Many of our students live and work in Dublin and need to be able to adapt quickly and efficiently to the target language spoken around them. Intensive reading and writing helps to develop and strengthen fluency and enhances confidence in one’s everyday use of the language. On Fridays, we incorporate English for Work/Academic Purposes to further develop students’ ability to live and work in an English language environment.

We offer our students two evenings out per week, gratis, in the company of our Outings Co-ordinator, Diane. This is a great opportunity for students to socialize, get to know the Irish way of life, and develop their listening and speaking skills informally - while having fun at the same time!

TEACHERS

All our teachers are fully qualified as per the Department of Education regulations for teaching English as a foreign language. There is on-going training for them which ensures that they are fully aware of the latest developments in the theory and practice of teaching English. They make up a motivated, friendly team that works with the students on a personal basis. All our teachers (and staff) understand that the experience of learning English is not only about classroom time and so they regularly socialise with the students.

SHORT TERM COURSES                  RETURN TO COURSE MENU

Students are placed in a small group which matches their current level as established in the pre-test placement test. As the classes are small, every opportunity is used by teachers to help students expand and improve their command of the language in the shortest time possible.

LONG TERM COURSES                 RETURN TO COURSE MENU

We place students in a class appropriate to their level and aim to bring them up to the next level within 16 weeks and to continue to progress at that rate. The speed at which students progress from one level to the next, however, is entirely dependent on their ability and commitment to learning. Those who have the aptitude and put the work in are often able to go up a level in less than 16 weeks.

Although the Department of Education (i.e. ACELS) maximum number of students per class is 15, we have restricted the maximum number per class to 10 (12 in July and August) to ensure more individual attention and better and faster results.

WORK PLACEMENT PROGRAMME                RETURN TO COURSE MENU

This programme is for students wishing to improve their general level of English and then progress into paid occupational/professional environments to practise their English. Students will follow a minimum of a 4 week English course and will then attend interviews with a view to being employed in a full time capacity for a minimum of 12 weeks.

This programme is for students with an INTERMEDIATE level of spoken English (or higher) only. We will arrange an interview to ensure that they have an adequate command of the language to complete the course. At this interview, our work placement partner will talk to you in detail about your previous work experience and the type of work you will be able to do in Dublin.

Once our Work placement partner is assured that you have the correct level of English, they will proceed to arrange a job interview. Once you have been offered a job, you will be expected to accept it. If you are not offered a job in your first interview, a maximum of 2 other interviews will be arranged.

You can choose what type of company/establishment you would like to work in (supermarket, restaurant, retail, factory, pub) but not the type of work to be carried out, as this depends on your previous work experience, level of spoken English and general ability to carry out same.

In order to apply for the Work Placement course, we need the following sent to us at least 4 weeks in advance of the start date of your English course:

• A completed Booking Form
• You should do our online test – this is for the English classes and is not part of the interview process and so an honest test is better so that we can put you in a class that is right for your level.
• A Curriculum Vitae in English - (preferably only one page in length)

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

  • All students should have at least an Intermediate level of spoken English prior to attending a job interview

  • All students should be 18 years or over and preferably in the 18-32 year old age bracket

  • Participants must attend an interview when an interview has been arranged for them and commit themselves to a minimum period of 12 weeks’ work with the company

  • They must be prepared to work the hours required by the company that employs them.

  • They are expected to take their job seriously and endeavour to be conscientious in every aspect of their job.

  • In the unlikely event of the student being unhappy in the company for a valid reason, a second interview will be arranged.

  • Once the student has been offered a job, we expect him/her to accept it. If the student is not successful at the first interview, we will then arrange a second interview and so on - to a maximum of 3 interviews.

  • Jobs are never guaranteed but subject to a successful interview with the employer

  • Only EU member citizens who are legally allowed to work in Ireland without a work permit are eligibl

  • The work placement fee of 300 euros is non-refundable

FULL TIME & PART TIME ACELS TEFL (CELT) COURSE                 RETURN TO COURSE MENU

Teaching English as a foreign language is a rewarding job for anyone with an interest in people and a fascination for other cultures. Working in Ireland you can have the world in your classroom or you can avail of the many opportunities to teach in almost any country around the world and really get to know it from the inside.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT TEFL COURSES IN IRELAND

You must have a recognised TEFL certificate in order to be allowed to teach English in an ACELS (Department of Education) Recognised TEFL School in Ireland. These certificates are issued by ACELS and are now also known as the Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELT).

Only recognised TEFL providers are allowed to issue CELT certificates.

If you intend to teach English in Ireland, please check carefully with the TEFL course provider if the course is ACELS certified or check the ACELS website directly. It is not enough that the course be run to ACELS standards, the provider MUST appear on this list in order to be considered as a recognised course.

The School TEFL/CELT course appears on this list and so is fully recognised as a TEFL school by the Department of Education and Science.

FULL & PART TIME COURSES

Both our full and part-time TEFL/CELT certificate qualify you to teach in all EFL schools around the world, including schools in Ireland recognised by ACELS. Upon successful completion of the course, you will understand teaching methodology, how to prepare a class, how to deliver a class and you will have had several opportunities to teach real students (whilst being observed with feedback provided).
